Initial Workshops of Freckles
In just one day over the Easter holidays talented young people who live in and around Bath launched “Freckles” a new youth musical. In eight hours of rehearing together, a highly motivated cast and team were then able to put on a show for a very appreciative audience at the Sophie Cameron Centre for Performing Arts, The Royal High School.
FRECKLES was originally inspired by “Anne of Green Gables” but is now an all British affair. The musical is set in 1930s South Devon. A young stranger encounters the colourful coastal community and glamorous visitors to Burgh Island. It’s a story about belonging, friendship and courage in the face of prejudice, danger and impending war. Young people aged from 7‐19 played the “kids” and the “adults”. The performers were from numerous schools and included students from The Dorothy Coleborn School of Dance, Curtain Up, Next Stage Youth and Zenith musical theatre.
The Vice chairman of The Mid‐Somerset Drama Festival and Head of Musical Theatre said “The cast was fabulous. Those playing adults did so with conviction and what a gathering of talent! The youngsters were by turn cute and then touching. We were humming the tunes on the way home which is a sure sign that they work. Words ‐ well what can I say… great script with huge potential for development. An uplifting evening indeed.”
